The Belgian Shepherd is also known as “Groenendael”. It is the most popular of Belgian dogs. A truly beautiful dog that will surely steal your heart with his gentleness, dedication and willingness to do everything for those he loves. Two other well-known varieties of the breed are Tervuren and Malinois. This breed is smart, faithful, affectionate and calm. He is sovereign and brave by nature. The domination of the owner must be enforced immediately so that the cohabitation is nice and peaceful. Once it is understood who the master is incredibly loyal and obedient. He is wary of the strangers and very protective and this makes him a good guard. It’s good with kids who know how to deal with a puppy. He has to spend enough time with the family every day and he can be stressed if he stays alone for a long time.

History of the Belgian Shepherd

The name of Belgian Shepherd can refer to any of the following four dogs. Groenendael, Tervuren, Malinois, and Laekenois. In some countries, all four different breeds are considered are considered to be the same just with different fur. Groenendael was developed by Nicholas Rose, a breeder from the village of Groenendael, Belgium. This dog has been used as a sheepdog, in police work, in wars, in the detection of drugs, in search and rescue, and as a family companion and guardian. Today Groenendael and Tervuren are commonly used as comrades and the Laekenois and Malinois as guardians.

Health and Care

Groenendael is a strong, healthy dog but may be infected by hereditary diseases such as hip or knee dysplasia, retinal atrophy and may experience epilepsy. It does need regular brushing. He is very active and walking only, does not please and does not satisfy the need for exercise. As it tends to impose its sovereignty, vocational training is recommended.
